CoinMarketCap issues urgent alert: platform will never DM to request funds or transfers
CoinMarketCap posted an urgent notice via social channels warning users that unsolicited direct messages requesting transfers are fraudulent and that official support will not ask for funds. The advisory urged traders to verify identities through CoinMarketCap’s verified support channels after several impersonation DM attempts were observed.
CoinMarketCap warned crypto users to ignore direct messages that solicit transfers or request funds, stressing the platform will never contact users via unsolicited DMs to ask for money. The alert followed multiple impersonation attempts where attackers used lookalike handles, fake verification badges and scripted messages to convince traders to send assets or click malicious links. CoinMarketCap advised verifying any support contact through the official website, support portal or authenticated social accounts, and to never approve wallet signatures or transactions in response to a direct message. The advisory reiterated standard crypto safety practices: enable two‑factor authentication on exchange and portfolio accounts, avoid signing arbitrary messages, use hardware wallets for high‑value holdings, and confirm links and contract addresses independently. It also encouraged users to report impersonator accounts to social platforms so they can be removed quickly, and to use official support ticket flows when in doubt rather than engaging with DMs that claim urgent account issues or trading opportunities.
