Holiday Shopping Alert: Fake E-Commerce Sites Surge 400% This Season
Security researchers identify over 6,000 fraudulent shopping sites mimicking major retailers.
Cybersecurity researchers have detected a staggering 400% increase in fake shopping websites ahead of the holiday season. These sophisticated counterfeit stores perfectly mimic legitimate retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Nike with nearly identical designs and stolen product images. Warning signs include: prices that seem too good to be true (70%+ discounts on popular items), recently registered domains (check WHOIS), missing or fake contact information, payment only via wire transfer, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. "Scammers are investing heavily in professional-looking sites that can fool even experienced online shoppers," researchers warn. Consumers should verify sites through official retailer apps, use credit cards for purchase protection, and be extremely wary of deals shared on social media.
